So why would I place Marilyn Elhart's letter into the context of a SIE? She undoubtedly experienced positive SIEs as a child, with me as the catalyst. Those moments made a profound and life-changing effect on her. Knowing that effect on her now certainly won't change how I teach elementary students, because that's in my distant past. What her message did do is to affirm what I did long ago, when I was clueless about how to teach. I've come to realize during a long career that my early teaching instincts were sound, but to now read the positive remarks of a student from my early years has had a powerful positive effect on me—a kind of retrospective SIE. So if you've been thinking of saying thanks to someone who positively (and perhaps unknowingly) affected your life with a SIE, do it. They'll appreciate it as much as I did—and as much as you would.
Robert Sylwester is an Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Oregon. He focuses on the educational implications of new developments in science and technology and has written several books and over 150 journal articles. His most recent books are The Adolescent Brain: Reaching for Autonomy (2007, Corwin Press), How to explain a brain: An educator's handbook of brain terms and cognitive processes (2004, Corwin Press),and A biological brain in a cultural classroom: Enhancing cognitive and social development through collaborative classroom management(2003, Corwin Press. second edition). The Education Press Association of America gave him three Distinguished Achievement Awards for his published syntheses of cognitive science research.
